Rules
The National Federation Rule Book used by the I.H.S.A.A. with standard
10-foot baskets and the following amendments will govern rules of play.
RULE 1 ELIGIBILITY OF PLAYERS
- A. All players must be enrolled in either the 5th or 6th grade.
Players must also be students of an invited Catholic school, or Catholic
registered in their parish. Coaches are responsible to see that these
requirements are met. Discovery of ineligible players will result in their
dismissal from the tournament and forfeiture of all games in which they were
participants.
- B. Players must remain on the same team for the entire tournament
RULE 2 TIMING OF THE GAME
- A. The game consists of eight-minute quarters of continuous play,
except when stopped on all whistles during the last two minutes of the 4th
quarter, and the last minute of play in overtime.
- B. Overtime periods are three minutes long. If the game is tied at
the end of two overtimes, the third overtime will be sudden death. With the
first team to score off a jump ball, being the winner.
- C. Time-outs are twenty seconds long. Coaches and players can call
time-outs. Each team will receive two time outs per half (not to be cumulative,
i.e., not four per game). Each team will receive one additional time out per
overtime period played.
- D. Injury time-outs are granted to allow the injured player to be
taken care of by the coach, parent, or medical personnel. Any player requiring
an injury time-out must be taken out of the game until the next substitution
break.
RULE 3 DEFENSE AND OFFENSE
- A. All teams must employ a person-to-person defense. Zone defenses
are illegal.
- B. Half court defense is limited to person-to-person. No guarding
in the back court.
- 1. Back court defense will be allowed during the last two minutes
of the 4th quarter.
- C. Illegal offense is described as a failure of a team to involve all
players in the offense. A team is not required to involve all players on each
possession, but it must have at least three players inside the three point arc
while running the offense (i.e., setting screens, moving to get open, etc.).
Three players standing still outside the three point arc will be an illegal
offense violation. Coaches are to make sure they involve all players on the
floor in their offense (no one on one schemes). The penalty for illegal offense
is a warning to the head coach on the first violation. Every violation
thereafter will result in technical foul on the head coach.
- D. Players may double team inside the three point arc, and triple
team inside the key. Penalty for violation is the same as rule C.
RULE 4 SUBSTITUTIONS
- A. Free substitutions allow players to change any time the ball is
blown dead by an official's whistle. Players must check in at the scorer's
table, and be waived in by an official before taking the floor. Open
substitution is allowed for the entire game.
RULE 5 FOULS, FREE THROWS, PENALTIES, THREE POINT SHOT
- A. Fouls occurring during continuos clock time before the final two
minutes of the game will be enforced as follows:
- 1. Non-shooting fouls charged to the defense results in the
continued possession of the ball by the offense.
- 2. Fouls charged to the offense result in the loss of the ball to
the defense.
- 3. Shooting fouls charged to the defense on a missed try for
basket, results in 1 point being awarded to the offense, and continued
possession of the ball by the offensive team under their own basket;
- 4. A made try for basket results in the value of the basket (2 or
3 points) plus 1 point, and the defensive team receiving the ball.
- B. All shooting fouls occurring during the last two minutes of play
will be awarded two shots.
- C. Free throws will only be attempted in the last two minutes of the
4th quarter, or the last minute of an overtime period. Exception: All flagrant,
intentional or technical fouls will be shot, (two shots, and the ball
possession) whenever they occur during the game. The clock will be stopped
during these free throws.
NOTE: This rule allows more actual playing time for the players
rather than spending the majority of the game lining up for free throws.
RULE 6 TECHNICAL FOULS AND PENALTIES
- A. Technical fouls are personal fouls, and team fouls. Technical
fouls are penalized by giving the offended team two free throws and continued

the gym will result in an immediate forfeit.

tolerated. If your fans are unruly, and disrespectful toward game officials, a
technical foul will be charged to the bench.

teams will be placed in boys bracket.
