MAJOR UNITS OF STUDY:
Space - including an in-house planetarium!
The Ocean - with ocean-themed activities
Bears - Bears will be part of our classroom for the year beginning with hibernation and ending with waking up in the Spring. The children write letters to their bears at the beginning and end of the Unit. This is a great way to compare the students' writing when school begins and ends.
Africa (Including Internet research of African animals and generating a report based on those facts)
100th Day of School - 1st Grade sells a plate of food (in the formation of a 100, i.e. bacon, bagel and orange half) for 100 cents ($1.00) to the entire school. Proceeds go to a charity to be determined by the class.
Geography & History (celebrating and exploring specific ethnic backgrounds of the of the current class).
Flat Stanley - Students will hear the story of a boy who becomes flat and mails himself around the world. Students will then create a version of themselves to a friend or family member out of town. The family will "adopt" the flat person and will return it to the student to share with the class.
